Inflation quietly shrinks what your money can buy. This calculator shows how much things will cost in the future, and what today's dollars will be worth then.
How to use this calculator
- Enter an amount in today's dollars.
- Enter an expected yearly inflation rate.
- Choose how many years ahead to look.
How it's calculated
Future cost = amount × (1 + inflation)years
Buying power is the reverse: amount ÷ (1 + inflation)years. At 3% inflation, prices double roughly every 23 years.
Frequently asked questions
What is a normal inflation rate?
The US Federal Reserve targets 2% a year. The long-run historical average for the US is roughly 3%, with some years much higher.
How do I protect savings from inflation?
Money that earns less than inflation loses buying power. High-yield savings, Treasury I bonds and long-term investments have historically helped savings keep up.
